A round peg in a square hole: How a new job has changed me as a leader

The last 12 months have seen a huge change in my life. Having departed the company I founded at the end of 2022, I set about creating a new business, a large-scale creative production company. The economy was not my friend, with many Australian music festivals and events calling it a day due to production prices, insurance costs rising, and falling ticket sales due to the cost of living. Whilst my passion and vision to set up this company has not waned, when I was offered a job (considered a 'unicorn' in Perth), to lead the Creative Activation and Public Engagement at the new Edith Cowan University AU$853m City Campus project I could not say no. The campus will bring 10,000 students into the heart of Perth along with a vast array of stunning performance venues and artists thanks to ECU's WA Academy of Performing Arts also relocating to the City Campus.

Shoehorning my entrepreneurial mindset and modus operandi into a large organisation with thousands of staff and layers has been a new challenge for me. Learning where to turn for support, what is required for approvals to do things, and how to create a new business within an established one, have all been really fascinating learning challenges that have stretched me and enabled me to continue to grow. I now need to be a more consultative leader, more process-driven, and simply more aware of being part of business, not the entire business. These are good challenges, and I am excited to continue my leadership journey whilst making a difference.

Also, the three books I read recently that had a great impact would be

  • Cal Newport – Deep Work

  • Hector Garcia – IKIGAI

  • Gary Keller, Jay Papasan – The ONE Thing
